In multi-sensor-based 3D environment reconstruction and remote vehicle control systems, camera data and LiDAR data are combined to rebuild a realistic 3D world. A billboard generated with a camera image is used for rendering distant places that cannot be detected by LiDAR. To improve the clarity of the reconstructed environment, the non-ground objects detected by LiDAR that are rendered independently should be removed from the ground mesh and billboard. This study proposes a method to remove the non-ground objects from the ground mesh and billboard that combines the multi-sensor data fusion technique and the 2D image boundary detection technique. The main contribution of this study is that the proposed method produces a ground mesh and billboard of a high quality and can be executed in real time owing to the efficiency of parallel computing. |
